Teen figures out how to decompose plastic bags in 3 months

It's not often I write about local advances, but this had me stunned.

Go Canada!

Ontario high school junior Daniel Burd wanted to try to figure out if there was a way to get plastic bags to decompose faster. As it stands, it takes thousands of years for the wasteful objects to disintegrate. But by using bacteria, he figured out how to make it happen in a mere three months

Regulators want answers from Bell Canada on P2P throttling

...interrogation is exactly what the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has in mind for Bell Canada. Late last week, the regulator issued a detailed set of "interrogatories" (PDF) complete with chart that must be filled in by May 29. The goal is to find out exactly how Bell's deep packet inspection technology throttles traffic and the justifications for using it on all Bell traffic, even that sold at wholesale rates to smaller ISPs. Anyone interested in these matters stands to learn plenty of interesting information 10 days from now.

wow, the government is acting more mature than the private sector for once.

kudos

What's in your Water?

A little more on the 'save the earth' thread; I just saw a tv spot for thinkwater.ca and couldn't agree more. We really waste a lot of water, especially in our consumerist society of North America.
I was a big fan of the 2 flush button toilets when I was in Europe. Essentially, one for brown, one for yellow. Self explanatory.

Here's a great spot on bottled water.
I must admit, I turn to the bottle once in a while, but it started when the water that came out of my student house was brown.... I just couldn't go back to tap. But it was mostly for grabbing a bottle on my way out (convenience, I know, weak excuse).
And to think, I loved drinking from the hose when I was a kid in the summer.

Best Line "A dollar fifty for half a litre, that's $3/litre. Would you ever buy gas for $3/litre? "

Really comes down to the same argument with all these conservation things. If everyone just thinks about what they do, and doesn't needlessly waste, we're already be much better off.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox.
Cheers.

Colon Cancer Ads get Creative

To promote Ontario’s new colon cancer screening program, BBDO Toronto created a television commercial featuring two see-through men talking at a hardware store. One points out that the other seems to have colon cancer, prompting the second transparent man to say he’ll get it checked out. A voiceover ends the spot with “You’re probably not see-though, so talk to your family health care provider about getting checked.”

Great way to approach the subject. Kudos to BBDO.

CRTC could let U.S. networks into Canada

Could it be true?
Could Canadians be getting HBO and ESPN?
Well.... maybe. Hearings start soon to see if the CRTC protectionism for CanCon will be lifted.

I think there needs to be a little help for the Canadian shows, but I'm all for bringing in competition. Tis the best way to grow after all.

LG Canada jumps into the touchphone market

Mid April will bring some sunshine (and probably another snow fall) to Canada, as LG shines Canadians with 3 new substitutes to the iPhone.

The company's carrier partners are touting exclusive deals for the new cell lineup: Telus is carrying the LG Venus, which will be first to market in Canada; then Rogers will launch the LG VU and Bell will launch the LG Vantage.

Of course, theses phones have been available in the US for months, and I'm sure for a year in Asia.

Here in Canada, we just have to get used to purchasing our phones out of country.

Pretty sad how the Nokia N95 is free w/ contract in the UK, where as it is not avail be through carriers here in Canada at all, and runs about $800 online.

*sigh*
All info on these mediocre phones available Here
