Blogs, Music, Montreal

I stumbled upon this blog while trying to figure out what an 'Ipod battle' is.

Turns out the blog is a nice like quazi scenster blog outa Montreal where I might be heading for a couple months.

Give Midnight Poutine a peep

Oh, and if you're wondering what an Ipod battle is, the short story,
Each team takes turns to play 1:30 of a song, then after 10 songs the crowd has to cheer for the team they liked best, and a decibel meter decides who wins.

Seems kinda lame, and kinda fun at the same time. I'll have to check one to decide for myself

LG Canada jumps into the touchphone market

Mid April will bring some sunshine (and probably another snow fall) to Canada, as LG shines Canadians with 3 new substitutes to the iPhone.

The company's carrier partners are touting exclusive deals for the new cell lineup: Telus is carrying the LG Venus, which will be first to market in Canada; then Rogers will launch the LG VU and Bell will launch the LG Vantage.

Of course, theses phones have been available in the US for months, and I'm sure for a year in Asia.

Here in Canada, we just have to get used to purchasing our phones out of country.

Pretty sad how the Nokia N95 is free w/ contract in the UK, where as it is not avail be through carriers here in Canada at all, and runs about $800 online.

*sigh*
All info on these mediocre phones available Here

I left my phone in my Matchbox...

The phone works as a standalone mobile device or fits into different “jackets” that basically take control of the mini core and can act as smartphones, game phones, or music phones. Expect Modu to hit the US late this year or early next.

Green Power!

The idea is to coat every piece of steel cladding with a solar cell paint. As steel is passed through the rollers multiple coatings of of the solar cell system are applied to it. Based on the preliminary research, the materials that are being applied are suited to capturing low level solar radiation, which means that they should work just as well

Internet Justice

On March 12, Jesse McPherson returned from his trip to SXSW only to find that his home in Philadelphia had been burglarized. The thief made off with his TV, an old Powerbook, and his Xbox 360. Naturally, he was upset, so he took it upon himself to call up some local pawn shops in the area to see if anyone had come in trying to hock his stuff.

Basically, the thief sends the owner an XBox msg saying I stole your XBox and you can buy it back.
Thanks to the internetz, thief was discovered, and all is right again in the world.

Why Easter's so early and sometimes very late

It all makes sense now.....
It's commonly said that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. That's mostly true. The dates for Easter were set out in a set of tables that used a complex mathematical formula to work out the future dates of the full moon and the equinox. They were developed by bishops at the Council of Nicea, convened in 325 AD by Emperor Constantine, who wanted to set a common Sunday for Easter celebrations around the world and to know in advance when it would be.

TO Star Article

So, where did bunnies and chocolate eggs come from?
There are many symbols associated with Easter- such as eggs, rabbits, chicks, and lilies. The Easter Bunny or the Easter Rabbit is a popular image of the holiday. Rabbits are known as the most fertile, as of which they are marked as important symbol of the festival. The first kind of Easter bunnies were made of pastry and sugar. However today, the Bunny is often made from chocolate and given to children in celebration of the Easter Bunny.

Another popular symbol of the festival is Easter egg. Egg is considered as a symbol for new life. So during the fasting period, Christians gave up the eating of egg, and resumes it on the Easter day. To add glory to the festival, eggs are dyed up and colored and decorated with other fancy items. Chocolate eggs are most popular and favorite amongst children. The chocolate eggs come in all sizes, from small bite size to the worlds biggest 8.32m huge egg made in Belgium. Hollow chocolate eggs often contain treats such as toys for the kids.

Similarly chicks also represent new life and re-birth.

Get Things Done by Recognizing Good Enough

Although I hate half-ass shit and putting out a poor product/service, sometimes good enough really is good enough.

It can be hard to accept imperfections, though. We all want to shine, and often feel that we won't be recognized unless our work is absolutely flawless. Yet there are plenty of examples where this isn't the case.

A Solar Grand Plan

By 2050 solar power could end U.S. dependence on foreign oil and slash greenhouse gas emissions
Key Concepts

* A massive switch from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power plants to solar power plants could supply 69 percent of the U.S.’s electricity and 35 percent of its total energy by 2050.
* A vast area of photovoltaic cells would have to be erected in the Southwest. Excess daytime energy would be stored as compressed air in underground caverns to be tapped during nighttime hours.
* Large solar concentrator power plants would be built as well.
* A new direct-current power transmission backbone would deliver solar electricity across the country.
* But $420 billion in subsidies from 2011 to 2050 would be required to fund the infrastructure and make it cost-competitive.

Interesting concept

Retailers Harness Digital Media for In-Store Experiences, Product Sampling

Holographic image of Kate Moss floating during the Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2006 runway show

IF implemented correctly and maintained with customers in mind, these new forms of interaction could really make or break a brand.
I find it frustrating how these things are taking so long to materialize. Half this stuff is nothing new, but finally getting the dinosaurs to agree to doing it is slowely coming around.
It was an in-store experience created for designer Nanette Lepore in Bloomingdale's in which customers could try on clothing and send video messages to friends' PCs and mobile devices for peer approval before buying. Those friends can also recommend other pieces to try on and customers in the store can try on virtual holograms of outfits.

Radiohead seeking fan produced videos

I guess they are really trying to cut back on costs....
j/k
Neat idea, though I'm still not impressed with their release of a low bit-rate copy of their album when they let you 'choose what to pay' for it.
NIN did a similar album release for Ghosts I–IV, but offered only the first half for free to 'sample' and then decide if you want to buy it. And of course, at 320kb/s, as Trent Reznor is an audiophile, nothing but the best from him.
Radiohead allowed fans to choose a price for their latest tunes. Now, the bestselling band is hoping fans will make them a music video, too.
TBD Records, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and animation web portal Aniboom.com are sponsoring an online contest inviting Radiohead fans to produce an animated music video for any song from “In Rainbows,” the band’s popular 2007 album that was originally available for download at an optional price.

Online voters and a panel of judges will select finalists, with Radiohead choosing a winner who will receive a $10,000 prize to produce a full-length animated music video. The competition began Monday and continues through April 27.

Moderately priced Furniture

I've always had mixed feeling about Ikea.
Some of the stuff is designed with a skeek, clean, European look, as it should be coming from Sweden.
But the quality always suffered. For the price, what can you expect.
Though yesterday, I saw a couple of their tables that someone bought, and let me tell you, they looked great!
Seems to be a solid build, with a great design.
Now, of course, something has to suffer at this expense; the casualty? Price.
These tables run for around $170CAN.
Still, looking good.

Great Stainless Table Top. Not too crazy about the legs, but they are interchangable.

Seems like a Bad Kung Fu Movie?

Fix Desynchronized Video and Audio with VLC

If you've spent hours ripping a DVD or downloading a video just to find—when all's said and done—that the audio and video aren't matching up, reader Will suggests using video-Swiss-Army-knife VLC's desynchronization feature to sync up the audio.

In the VLC Preferences, click on Audio and then tick the Advanced options checkbox; there is an Audio desynchronization compensation setting that allows you to set a positive or negative time delay between the video and audio tracks in milliseconds. I find unsynchronized video/audio unbearable, and have been known to delete files without watching them for it. It never occurred to me that there would be such a simple solution!

Stumbled upon this while I was looking for a new laptop.

This site asks you a bunch of questions on what you want out of your product and then spits out a list of recommendations. Seems to be a good way of getting a general idea on which brands/models that can fill your needs.

It doesn't seem to be bias, but personally, I would only use it as a general guide as you never know exactly how those 'recommendations' come about.
